Root Canal

We know that nobody ever wants to hear that they need a root canal. The good news, however, is that this procedure isn’t nearly as bad as what you’ve been led to believe. In fact, a study conducted by the American Association of Endodontists (dentists who specialize in treating the roots of your teeth) found that most people who reported a root canal as being painful had never actually had one!

So let’s set the rumors aside for a bit and look at what a root canal actually is and why they are sometimes necessary.

Although people usually refer to the procedure as a “root canal,” this is actually the name of the part of your tooth being treated. The root canal runs through the root of each tooth and houses the nerve along with other tissues. Sometimes, these tissues become infected. Since the infection is so close to the nerve, it’s not surprising that these infections are incredibly painful.

Root canal therapy is a treatment that removes the infection from the tooth along with the damaged nerve. Once this is done, the canal is filled with a material that helps protect the tooth and prevent reinfection.

We are careful to make sure that you don’t feel a thing during your procedure. Your comfort is important to us. Following treatment, you may feel some residual discomfort, but this will dissipate as your immune system gets the message that the infection is gone.
